We Are Your Neighbors: Craig Norris, Davenport, 3011

My wife, Kathy, and I are empty-nesters; however we have loads of fun with our two four-legged “kids”, Gracie, a Golden Retriever and Abbie, a Papillion. They give us alot of joy and happiness. I have one daughter, Amy and son-in-law, Himar whom is from the Canary Islands of Spain; they live in Ottumwa and we are blessed to have a beautiful granddaughter, Belen, who we truly enjoy. My daughter is pregnant and is expecting in May; we are hopeful for a grandson this time. Amy is a pre-school teacher; her husband works with immigrants through Iowa State University Extension program. Kathy has one daughter, Stephanie whom is working on her second college degree for Bachelors in Nursing from Grandview College in Des Moines.

I am a Veterans Representative for IowaWORKS based in the Davenport office and do outreach in Clinton and Maquoketa offices as well. I have been a Veterans Representative for the past eighteen years, twelve which I spent in rural Iowa in Ottumwa. I moved to Davenport in 2005 and have been a part of the Davenport Veterans Team for the past 6 years. I provide intensive Case Management services to our Veterans who have barriers to employment and assist them with overcoming those barriers. I work with alot of community and service-based organizations providing veterans referrals and resources to the proper local agencies. I also work with homeless Veterans and refer them to referral agencies that can assist them with additional services. Over the past 5 years I have been involved with our local initiative, “Shoes for Veterans” program that has assisted with providing new and gently used shoes, clothing, and winter apparel to homeless Veterans prior to the harsh winter months that Iowa homeless Veterans have to endure.

As a retired Navy Veteran serving over twenty years, with twelve years as a Navy Career Counselor, it has allowed me to bring those skills into my current career with IowaWORKS to assist Veterans today with their training and employment needs. Having a job in this capacity allows me to gain respect and admiration of my family, fellow veterans, friends and peers. Our state-wide motto is “Veterans helping Veterans” … this is a job I truly enjoy and find rewarding.
