AFSCME Iowa Council 61 - Every Day. Everywhere. Making Iowa Better.

We Are Your Neighbors: Marty Hathaway, Coralville, Local 2985

ABOUT MARTY:
I have a beautiful wife Lauire who works at the University of Iowa, during our free time we enjoy motorcycle riding and every year going fishing with my entire family.  I have been a union leader for the AFSCME Council 61 in Iowa for many years and have held many positions for the union. I have volunteered in many elections working with the Democratic party and candidates that back public employees.

I am also a member of the Iowa Patriot Guard Riders of Iowa. The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security.

I am not a veteran but I do believe that we should show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.  We shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors, and I take great pride in doing this.

WHAT MARTY DOES:
I am a Correctional Officer working at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center. I started with the great state of Iowa 6/22/1979.

WHAT MARTY'S JOB MEANS TO HIM FAMILY AND HIS COMMUNITY:
When I started with the state of Iowa in 1979 as a state employee the wages were so low we qualified for food stamps even though I didn’t take them, but I stayed with the job because of the benefits, over the years the wages came up and now we have dignity and respect on the job. I am just like every other person living in Iowa I want to make a good wage and pay my taxes and grow old with my wife.
