AFSCME members are involved in all sorts of community organizations and causes. Whether they work for the State, a county, a city, a school district, a private sector employer, or as a home care or child care provider,

AFSCME members are involved in communities large and small. In addition, many continue and expand their community involvement after reaching retirement.

The following contain just a sample of some of those community activities.

For the purposes of this list, the members listed have been divided up according to the map pictured above. Within each region, they are generally listed from north to south based on the location of their volunteer activity.

WESTERN IOWA:

Matt Jacobs (AFSCME Local 1774, Road Grader Operator for Sioux County) is a volunteer firefighter for the Hawarden Volunteer Fire Department.

Darrell Taylor (AFSCME Local 212, City of Sioux City employee) is a volunteer firefighter in Hinton, Iowa.

Timothy Grell (AFSCME Local 2999, a Highway Technician Senior with the Iowa Department of Transportation) is a chapter committee member for the National Wild Turkey Federation. His chapter educates kids about hunting and hunting safety. They also raise funds for preservation and youth hunting education.

Ben Kannedy (AFSCME Local 2844, Utility Worker at Council Bluffs Public Works) is a volunteer firefighter with the Missouri Valley Fire Department. He also assists the Fire Department with fundraisers and training.

Dennis Patrick (AFSCME Local 3861, Building Inspector for the City of West Des Moines) is a member of the Guthrie Center City Council.

Jay Kennedy (AFSCME Local 2844, Wastewater Treatment Plant employee at City of Council Bluffs) is a member and volunteer of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He participates in fundraisers for Juvenile Diabetes causes.

Mary Cooley (AFSCME Local 3004, Workforce Advisor with Iowa Workforce Development) is on the annual fundraising committee for the North Iowa Vocational Center and is involved with the local mental health council.

Tammy Domonoske (AFSCME Local 3004, Iowa Department of Natural Resources employee) volunteers for the “Lights on 5K” race fundraiser, Opportunity Village, and Seawall to Seawall ½ Marathon.

Tamra Muschick (AFSCME Local 2984, Nurse at the Iowa Veterans Home) is a volunteer organist at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Ackley. She also volunteers for other church activities.

Tracey Goodrich (AFSCME Local 3009, Workforce Advisor at Iowa Workforce Development) is on the Greene, Iowa Pool Board. She also assists with youth baseball and basketball teams and is a committee member and advancement chair for the local Cub Scouts.

Dan Bednar (AFSCME Local 3015, Correctional Officer at Fort Dodge Correctional Facility) is a 15 gallon blood donor with the Blood Center of Iowa. He volunteers to read newspapers for IRIS (Iowa Radio Reading Information Service for the Blind and Print Handicapped). He is a lector for mass readings for Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Webster County. He is active in the Knights of Columbus and participated in their annual Tootsie Roll Drive to raise funds for intellectually disabled individuals.

Connie Hanson (AFSCME Local 3015, Correctional Officer at Fort Dodge Correctional Facility) is a volunteer with DSAOC (Domestic/Sexual Assault Outreach Center).

Mike Ahrens (AFSCME Local 90, Equipment Operator with Boone County Secondary Roads) is a volunteer firefighter for the Ogden Fire Department and a volunteer EMT with Ogden First Responders.

Robert Sill (AFSCME Local 870, Motor Vehicle Operator at Iowa State University) volunteers for his church, neighborhood schools, the Edwards Neighborhood Association, and the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is a member of American Legion Post #37.

Brian Jennings (AFSCME Local 3450) serves on the Ames Jewish Congregation Board of Directors.

Kathy Butler (AFSCME Local 2990, Resident Treatment Worker at Woodward Resource Center) volunteers for Church of Immaculate Conception in Granger by assisting with the food pantry, Sunday School, and more. She also volunteers for Woodward-Granger Schools.

Matt Hix (AFSCME Local 3000, Highway Technician Associate for Iowa Department of Transportation) is a captain at the Prairie Volunteer Fire Department.

Andy Hick (AFSCME Local 3000, Highway Technician Associate for Iowa Department of Transportation) is a member of the Dallas County Fair Board.

Don Ehm (AFSCME Local 35, a Maintenance Worker at the Iowa Department of Administrative Services) volunteers for the Lutheran Church of Hope in Ankeny.

Michelle Jacobs (AFSCME Local 451, Correctional Officer at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women) is a member of the church choir and volunteer at Cornerstone Church in Altoona.

Randy Summy (AFSCME Local 1868, Sr. Printing Technician in the Polk County print shop) is an elder at Community Church of Christ in Des Moines. He also volunteers his time for the church youth group and to help with grounds and maintenance work at the church. Randy volunteers for the Iowa State Pigeon Association and serves as judge at their pigeon shows and at the State Fair.

Ty Blackford (AFSCME Local 1868, Youth Service Worker at Polk County Juvenile Detention Center) is a member of the Grimes City Council and a firefighter/medic with Grimes Fire and Rescue. He is also the liaison for the City of Grimes to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the liaison to the Grimes Public Health and Safety Board.

Sandra Loney (AFSCME Local 1868, Polk County Jail employee) volunteers as a Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and PTO volunteer. Together, her family has taken part in multiple volunteer activities such as cleaning up parks, planting trees, boxing meals at Christmas time, and donating and boxing up Christmas gifts.

Vince Gowdy (AFSCME Local 1868, Polk County employee) has coached football and basketball (ages 6-13) at the John R. Grubb YMCA for 17 years. He is also active in his church’s activities.

Dann Flaherty (AFSCME Local 1868, Polk County employee) has been a volunteer for the Boy Scouts for many years. He is currently the Hawkeye District Roundtable commissioner and a Scouting Trainer with the Boy Scouts. He is currently working on setting up a new troop on the Northeast side of Des Moines.

Greg Lewis (AFSCME Local 2840) is active in Izaak Walton League projects including Handicapped Fishing Day at Big Creek State Park.

Marc Wallace (AFSCME Local 2984, Public Defender for the State of Iowa) is a youth soccer referee. He is also a member of the Des Moines Water Works Board of Trustees and Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation Board. Marc volunteers for the Iowa State Bar Association Criminal Law Section Council.

Rob Strickler (AFSCME Local 2997, Right of Way Agent with DOT) is a volunteer for Amanda the Panda and the NASH FM Radiothon for St. Jude. He is also a tournament softball coach for NDM Pink Fusion 10U Girls Softball in the North Des Moines Girls Softball League.

Joel Westendorf (AFSCME Local 3013, Installation Security Officer at Iowa Department of Public Defense) is the fire chief for the Delaware Township Fire Department and treasurer for the Polk County Fire Chiefs Association.

Danny Homan (AFSCME Locals 3289 and 2840) is an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Rich Hill (AFSCME Local 3450, Iowa Workforce Development - OSHA Consultation and Education) has been part of the Baxter Fire Department for forty years. He even delivered Polk County’s New Year’s Baby in 1978! He has also been the chairman/treasurer of the Evangelical Free Church of Baxter since 1992.

Beth Scheetz (AFSCME Local 3450, Administrative Law Judge at Iowa Workforce Development) sings in the church choir at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Des Moines. She is also the assistant choir director.

Darlene Rodgers (AFSCME Local 3450, Clerk Specialist at the Iowa Board of Nursing) is on the Senior Usher Board at Maple Street Baptist Church in Des Moines. She is also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Elks and takes part in their charitable projects.

Mike McCarthy (retired Iowa Department of Revenue Data Security Administrator) is a member of the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association Board of Directors. He helped reinvigorate the neighborhood watch program in the Beaverdale neighborhood. He one of the coordinators for one of the Des Moines Area Religious Council food pantries. He is a Deacon in the Catholic Church at St. Ambrose Cathedral. He is on the Board of Directors for The Bridge, a consortium of four downtown Des Moines churches that provide lunches for the homeless. He volunteers at the pantry at Epworth United Methodist Church in Des Moines.

Mel Pins (AFSCME Local 3450, Executive Officer at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources) is the Chair of the Des Moines Zoning Board of Adjustment and the President of the Somerset Neighborhood Association.

Kathleen O’Leary (retired from Iowa Workforce Development) is an activist on behalf of persons with disabilities.

Kevin Trevillyan (AFSCME Local 3861, Engineering Technician with West Des Moines Waterworks) is a member of the West Des Moines City Council. He has been a member of Gnemeth Masonic Lodge in West Des Moines since 1979 and has been a member of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Altoona since 1995.

Vinny White (AFSCME Local 3861, Water Distribution Specialist with West Des Moines Water Works) is a volunteer firefighter with the West Des Moines Fire Department.

Julie Aufdenkamp (AFSCME member in the newly organized state education unit, Senior Service Specialist for the Blind at the Iowa Department for the Blind) is a member of the Iowa Reapers Beep Baseball Team.

Margaret Jensen Connet (AFSCME member in the newly organized state education unit, Education Program Consultant at the Iowa Department of Education) is a volunteer for the Polk County Conservation Board.

Joann Muldoon (AFSCME member in the newly organized state education unit, Community Health Consultant for the Iowa Department of Public Health) is a volunteer for her neighborhood association, the King School garden, and local youth/young adult violence prevention efforts.

Tom Rendon (AFSCME member in the newly organized state education unit, Education Consultant with the Iowa Department of Education) is the treasurer for Parenting Way, the treasurer for the Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children, and a member of the Urbandale United Church of Christ Choir.

Lynn Bedford (retired from State Treasurer’s Office) is the secretary of the Altoona Firefighters Association. She helps with the Association’s annual fundraiser, the children’s Christmas party, the MDA Boot Drive, and paperwork.

Mickey Carlson (retired from Iowa Finance Authority) helped her church start a Family Promise Program that assists homeless families.

Ken Clausen (retired from Iowa Workforce Development/OSHA) volunteers weekly at a Catholic hospital.

Kindra Stevenson (AFSCME Local 451, Correctional Officer at Newton Correctional Facility) is a volunteer firefighter/EMT at Kellogg Fire and Ambulance.

Dennis Witte (AFSCME Local 2997, DOT Highway Tech Associate) is a volunteer firefighter/EMT at Kellogg Fire and Ambulance.

Mark Frymoyer (AFSCME Local 3015) is a member of the Kellogg City Council and Deputy Chief of EMS and a volunteer firefighter/paramedic with Kellogg Fire & Ambulance. He is also a reserve deputy and tactical paramedic for the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department.

Mark Edge (AFSCME member in the newly organized state education unit, Senior Service Specialist for the Blind at the Iowa Department for the Blind) is a member of the Newton Lions Club community service organization and serves as their pancake breakfast coordinator. He is also a volunteer van pool driver for the DART RideShare Program.

Paula Martinez (AFSCME Local 3013, Judicial Assistant at 5th Judicial District in Polk County) is a volunteer for Adoption Saturday, where she assists families who are finalizing adoption of their children. She also volunteers for the American Legion Auxiliary. She is a trustee for Richland Township in Warren County. Paula is a member and volunteer for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) whose mission is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of Iowa and the United States.

Dale Gruis (AFSCME member in the newly organized state education unit, Education Consultant for the Iowa Department of Education) is an Iowa FFA Foundation Board member and a Iowa FFA State Association Advisor.

Cheryl Benson (AFSCME member in the newly organized state education unit, Education Program Consultant for Iowa Department of Education in Southeast Iowa) is involved in the AAUW Book Sale and the Family and Consumer Sciences Club in Oskaloosa.

Ron Yarkosky (AFSCME Local 3568, Motor Vehicle Enforcement Officer) is a member of the Albia City Council.

Bonnie Eggers (AFSCME Local 3018, Secretary at State Public Defender’s Office in Ottumwa) volunteers at Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa. She assists with the Workingman’s Christmas in Ottumwa. She also assists with the distribution of holiday gifts for families in need in her local area. She is a volunteer for the Heartland Humane Society.

Susan Ditzler (AFSCME Local 3018, Investigator with the State Public Defender’s Office in Ottumwa) is a member of the Ottumwa Noon Lions Club and is active in their charitable programs. She is a volunteer for the Heartland Humane Society including providing foster care for animals. She is a blood donor for the Mississippi Valley Blood Center. She is a member of ABATE. She is a member of the Ottumwa Garden Club. She is a volunteer for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ottumwa and volunteers at Hope House and the food pantry through her church.

Jeanna Pierce (AFSCME Local 3289, Probation/Parole Officer with the 8th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services) volunteers at Eisenhower Elementary School in Ottumwa. Her activities have included meals for teachers during conferences and fundraising for the school.

EASTERN IOWA:

Mike Prideaux (AFSCME Local 679, Program Coordinator (Medical and Environmental Services) for Black Hawk County Health Department) is the vice chair of the Tri-County Child and Family Inc (Head Start) Board of Directors. He is a board member of Hopes Healthy Families and a task force member of the Black Hawk County Multidisciplinary Task Force.

Ann-Marie Nielsen (AFSCME Local 679, RN/Public Health Nurse at Black Hawk County Health Department) volunteers for Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church and is completing her sixth year of teaching confirmation. She is on the board of Magical Mix Kids, a local organization that takes chronically or terminally ill children and family to Disney World. She takes part in H2 Jamaica, a program where medical professionals help coordinate clinics to bring Hope and Health (H2) to Jamaica.

Beccy Johnson (AFSCME Local 2659, Secretary at the University of Northern Iowa Office of International Programs) is the entertainment chair, a team ambassador, and a team captain (Hula Hunnies) for Black Hawk County Relay for Life. She was also asked to be the honorary cancer survivor for the UNI Relay for Life.

Emily Stowe (AFSCME Local 2659, Secretary in Student Support Services at the University of Northern Iowa) volunteers with art programs in the community.

Sue Jordan (AFSCME Local 2659, Clerk at the University of Northern Iowa) has served as a host to over 100 international students and visiting faculty.

Lenore Davis (AFSCME Local 3009, Administrative Assistant with the Iowa Department of Human Services) is a member of Simply United Together, an organization that does things to better their community in Waterloo.

Marcy Laughridge (AFSCME Local 3009, Administrative Assistant with the Iowa Department of Human Services) is a co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 6625. Her troop has made baskets for local nursing homes, helped plan and hold food drives, helped clean up a Girl Scout camp, and held an appreciation dinner for teachers and staff at Immanuel School when it closed.

Nicole Ruth (AFSCME Local 3009, Administrative Assistant with the Iowa Department of Human Services) is a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagle Local 76. She helps organize and carry out their social activities and fundraisers.

Ginger Menster (AFSCME Local 3289, Residential Officer with 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services) is on the Athletic Booster Board for Anamosa High School and the Post Prom Committee. She works the concession stands for sporting events at the high school. She collects gate money at the Eastern Iowa Sports Facility in Monticello for softball tournaments. She also volunteers at her church.

Jim Green (AFSCME Local 2994, Sr. Correctional Officer at Anamosa State Penitentiary) helps coach a youth wrestling team in Maquoketa.

Michelle Ray-Michalec (AFSCME Local 12, Psychiatric Nursing Assistant at UIHC) is the chair of the Iowa Commission of Persons with Disabilities, the vice chair of the Commission on Asian Pacific Islanders, and a member of the Iowa Board of Human Rights.

Jeff Silver (AFSCME Local 183, Paramedic with Johnson County Ambulance) is a volunteer firefighter/medical officer for the Lisbon Fire Department. He is also a volunteer member of the board of directors for the Lisbon Mt. Vernon Ambulance Service. He is a volunteer grade A well operator for his community well association and is responsible for maintaining the well and distribution system that serves seventeen homes.

Tony Nemmers (AFSCME Local 231, Resource Technician at Linn County Conservation) is a volunteer firefighter with the Anamosa Fire Department.

Jean Vandivier (AFSCME Local 231, Purchasing Agent for Linn County) volunteers for Cedar Hills Community Church’s community projects such as meals for the Mission of Hope and caring for families in need.

Tracy Ehlert (AFSCME Local 1212, Child Care Provider) volunteers as the preschool room child care coordinator for the Young Parents Network in Cedar Rapids. She also volunteers as the Ready to Read facilitator for the Young Parent’s Network’s Literacy Pilot Project. Additionally, the children in her Babies 2 Kids Learning Center complete a community project each month with her help.

Jim Payton (retired from Iowa Medical and Classification Center (Oakdale Prison)) volunteers for the Iowa Veterans Welcome Center in Cedar Rapids and is their treasurer. Jim has been working to restore the seats at the Veterans Memorial Building’s auditorium.

Sean Nelson (AFSCME Local 3289, Residential Officer at 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services) is a firefighter/EMT for Monroe Township and a member of the Kaaba Shrine.

Tim McClimon (AFSCME Local 3289, 7th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services employee) is a member of the DeWitt Central Athletic Boosters and the Clinton County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee.

Tammy Coverdale-Bauer (AFSCME Local 12, Clerk in the University of Iowa Financial Aid Office) sings with a group from the Iowa City Senior Center called Family Folk Machine; this unique group features folks from five to seventy-five. They give free concerts for many community events. She also is a volunteer with the Council for International Visitors to Iowa Cities. This is sponsored by US Department of State Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. She meets and entertains visitors from foreign countries. She also volunteers for the NALC National Letter Carriers Canned Food Drive in the Iowa City area.

Earl Gingerich (AFSCME Local 12, Clinical Technician at the University of Iowa) volunteers at a local thrift store and is a trustee of his church.

Laurie Hathaway (AFSCME Local 12, Clerk with University of Iowa Housing and Dining) volunteers for the Homeless Children’s Trust Christmas Party for homeless children.

Mary Larew (AFSCME Local 12) is involved in a multitude of charitable endeavors in Johnson County including: the Coralville Optimist Club’s Good Reader Program, Shelter House, Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, the Homeless Children’s Trust (including their back to school project and Christmas party for homeless children). She serves in leadership roles for several of these organizations.

Marilyn Coulter (retired from being Head Cook in a dorm kitchen at the University of Iowa) donates stocking caps, gloves, mittens, and scarves for hundreds of children in the community. She has a group called Cassie’s Mittens where contributions are sought and organized. Marilyn was a volunteer as Mrs. Santa Claus at the Homeless Children's Trust Christmas Party. She also volunteers for the Boy Scouts.

Dan Daly (retired University of Iowa College of Engineering Clerk) volunteers for Meals on Wheels, Table to Table (Food Rescue), and the Coralville Ecumenical Food Pantry. He volunteers to be Santa for charitable events. He also volunteers for the NALC National Letter Carriers Canned Food Drive in the Iowa City area. He also volunteered for the Iowa City Federation of Labor University of Iowa Homecoming Float project.

Jean Hagen (retired from University of Iowa) volunteers at Book End, the used book store within the Iowa City Public Library. She also volunteers to cook for the Iowa City Free Lunch Program and volunteers as a child care worker.

Bob Sulzer (AFSCME Local 12, University of Iowa Housing and Dining Facilities Mechanic) plays guitar with a band called “Time Beings” and volunteers his guitar playing skills for the City Circle Acting Company of Coralville. Recently he has been in “Jesus Christ Super Star” and “Hair.” He also volunteers for the Homeless Children’s Trust Christmas party for homeless children: this year he played guitar at the party with Kevin B. F. Burt.

Jim Walters (retired University of Iowa Groundskeeper) is a RSVP volunteer in the Iowa City Community School District and reads to children in kindergarten and sixth grade. He also volunteered for the Iowa City Federation of Labor University of Iowa Homecoming float project and the NALC National Letter Carriers Canned Food Drive in the Iowa City area.

Larry Fitzpatrick (AFSCME Local 183, Wastewater Treatment Operator for the City of Iowa City) volunteers for the Extend a Dream Foundation at Uptown Bill's Coffee House once a week. He repairs bicycles and helps train mechanics at the Iowa City Bicycle Library. Larry donates blood at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center. He also volunteered for the Iowa City Federation of Labor University of Iowa Homecoming float project.

Curt Moore (retired Correctional Officer/Trades Leader at Iowa Medical and Classification Center) is a Johnson County -- Penn Township Trustee.
