About AFSCME Iowa Council 61

In Iowa, AFSCME Iowa Council 61 represents 40,000 public employees including law enforcement and correctional officers, firefighters, mental health workers, professional school staff, emergency responders, and many other workers. AFSCME Iowa Council 61 also represents home health care and child care providers across the state and private sector workers at Prairie Meadows, Palmer College of Chiropractic, Des Moines University, and ABM (Marshalltown).

On a daily basis, our members are working to improve the quality of life in our schools, neighborhoods, communities, and for our families.

AFSCME Iowa Council 61 is made up of over 100 self-governing Locals.

Our six Districts organize efforts between our local unions, train and educate our volunteer leaders, provide representation and bargaining support to our members, and coordinate legislative activities.

We are a member of AFSCME International, the country's leading public employee union with more than 1.6 million members.
