Profile: Stephen Slobodnik (AFSCME Local 2995)

BACKGROUND:

Stephen (pictured left) is a Correctional Officer at the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility. For twenty-five years, he was worked to keep the public, his coworkers, and inmates safe. Prior to beginning work as a Correctional Officer, he served his country in the US Air Force as a Fireman for thirteen years where he worked to keep his fellow service members safe.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Stephen has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for over twenty-five years. He was introduced to the organization through a friend in the military and became involved through his church.

As the father of two daughters with special needs, the Knights’ efforts to assist children with intellectual and physical disabilities is near to his heart. For the last eleven years, Stephen has been in charge of his local Knights’ fundraising efforts to help children with special needs. The campaign he leads solicits donations from businesses and the public. Each year over Labor Day Weekend, he organizes volunteers to stand outside of businesses to solicit donations. In 2014, this involved about 30 knights and family who volunteered.

Stephen is the Faithful Navigator (chairman) of Knights of Columbus Assembly 261 which brings together different Knights in his region.

Stephen has also been a member of the American Legion for the past three years. He participates in the Legion’s charitable fundraising and events.

WHY HE VOLUNTEERS—IN HIS OWN WORDS:

“I think it is important to give back to our community—especially those who need it most. Too often the most vulnerable are overlooked. In a way, my volunteering is my way of helping to address that.”
