An employee has a right to have ONE independent medical examination at the employer’s expense. This examination is done to see if the permanent impairment rating assigned by the treating doctor is appropriate, but can also determine if greater work restrictions are needed, more care is necessary, etc. As the employee gets only one of these exams, and the results of the exam is critically important to how the injury is to be compensated as well as other rights the employee may have, workers are highly encouraged to consult an attorney before seeking such an exam.
