AFSCME Iowa Council 61 - Every Day. Everywhere. Making Iowa Better.

Profile: Chad Snyder (AFSCME Local 2984)

BACKGROUND:

Chad Snyder is a Driver at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He drives Veterans Home residents to medical appointments. This includes trips to the Veterans Affairs Hospitals in Des Moines and Iowa City as well as many individual doctor’s offices in Des Moines. These trips help ensure that the veterans and spouses living at the Iowa Veterans Home get the care they need.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: BCLUW-EAST MARSHALL STRAIGHT SHOOTERS ASSISTANT SHOTGUN COACH

In 2013, a shooting sports team was organized at BCLUW Schools and East Marshall Schools as part of the Scholastic Shooting Program. The team includes students interested in shooting sports in grades 6-12.

Chad has been a hunter for over thirty years. Given his experience and his son and daughter’s interest in the team, he volunteered to serve as an assistant shotgun coach after speaking with the head coach who was organizing the team. Chad has been one of the three to four assistant coaches for the team; he works primarily with the team members in grades 6-8. In both years, about thirty students took part in team activities. At the team’s first state tournament, twenty students participated.

Chad is also the scout master for Troop 107 Conrad. Prior to becoming scout master, he volunteered as an assistant scout master.

WHY HE VOLUNTEERS—IN HIS OWN WORDS:

“I feel that shooting is an important skill that every student should have the opportunity to learn if they want to do so. This team is a great opportunity for students to learn shooting skills in an environment that emphasizes teamwork, school pride, and safety.”
