AFSCME Iowa Council 61 - Every Day. Everywhere. Making Iowa Better.

Profile: Kaia Downing (AFSCME Local 3289)

BACKGROUND:

Kaia has been a Parole Officer for the 3rd Judicial District Department of Correctional Services in Sioux City for nine years. She helps keep the public safe by supervising paroled offenders and helping them rejoin society in a lawful, productive manner. Prior to becoming a Parole Officer, Kaia was a Sioux City Police Officer.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IN SIOUX CITY

Kaia joined First Lutheran Church in Sioux City in the Fall of 2006. She has steadily become more and more active in church and has served as the president of the Church Council, the highest lay office at her church.

Her volunteering at church grew out of one her talents - singing. In fact, the first Sunday after she joined First Lutheran she volunteered as the cantor, which involves leading the congregation in songs and singing between readings and during communion. She has also been very active in the church choir.

Kaia’s entire family, including her two daughters and her husband (a Sioux City Police Officer) take part in church activities with her.

In addition to serving her church musically, Kaia volunteers as a lay assistant, lay reader, Sunday School teacher, and a parent volunteer. She also enjoys being part of the church volleyball team.

Outside of church, Kaia also volunteers for the Girl Scouts and the PTA at Clark Elementary School in Sioux City. She has been particularly involved with the Fall Fundraising Carnival at Clark Elementary School.

WHY SHE VOLUNTEERS—IN HER OWN WORDS:

“I enjoy volunteering at my church because of the fellowship and teamwork between members. We all have fun. Volunteering is all about being good stewards to God and the community of Sioux City. By being involved in the community, I am leading by example for my entire community and especially my two daughters.”
