BACKGROUND:

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: AMERICAN LEGION AND CORRECTIONVILLE CHURCH OF CHRIST

In 1991, Scott returned to his hometown, Washta, after his service in the US Air Force. Soon after his return, the commander of American Legion Post 283 asked him to join. The American Legion offered him an opportunity for fellowship with his fellow veterans and an opportunity to give back to his community. He serves in the post’s honor guard, which provides 21-gun salutes at Memorial Day services and at the funerals of veterans from the local area.

Scott grew up attending the Correctionville Church of Christ. He began volunteering for the church in 1997, assisting with the vacation bible school and doing general maintenance work on the then newly acquired church building. In 1998, he became a church deacon which gave him a role in overseeing the minister’s work, assisting with Christian education, and further building maintenance responsibilities. He later became a church trustee, where he helps oversee the financial work of the church’s treasurer.

Previously, Scott served as a member of the Washta City Council for twenty years and as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for fifteen years. In 2014, he was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Washta City Council.

WHY HE VOLUNTEERS—IN HIS OWN WORDS:

“My volunteer work is about respecting those that came before us. I take part in the American Legion Honor Guard to pay respect to those veterans who sacrificed so much to protect our freedom. I volunteer at the church to honor the legacy of those in the community who made it possible for me to attend the church as kid. It’s all about honor and respect.”
