AFSCME Iowa Council 61 - Every Day. Everywhere. Making Iowa Better.

Profile: Robert Henderson (AFSCME Local 3289)

BACKGROUND:

Robert is a Parole/Probation Officer for the 1st Judicial District Department of Correctional Services in Waterloo. He protects the public while working with offenders to guide them towards becoming full members of the community once again.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: FITNESS TRAINING FOR COMMUNITY YOUTH

Formerly a successful body builder, Robert has provided fitness training for neighborhood youth for over twenty-five years. His giving back to the community started when youth saw his success as body builder and came to him for advice on how to train. Having benefited himself from having a mentor when he was younger, he began to give back to the community by helping young body builders and athletes train. His trainees include some very successful athletes, including a couple national champion wrestlers.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: NAACP MEMBER

Robert has been a member of his local NAACP chapter for over fifteen years. He has helped his chapter address discrimination complaints that are brought to the NAACP’s attention.

WHY HE VOLUNTEERS—IN HIS OWN WORDS:

“I became involved in the NAACP because it is important to not just say your values, but put them into action. By taking action to reduce discrimination, I am helping my community live up to the ideals of this great country.

“I help Waterloo-area athletes weight train not just to help make them better athletes. I try to give advice, guidance, and teach that the most important thing they can do is to get a strong education and become good citizens.”
