The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 2989 is based out of Fort Madison, Iowa. We represent a variety of correctional professionals within the Iowa Department of Corrections at the Iowa State Penitentiary, including Correctional Officers, Psychologists, Activities Specialists, Food Service Coordinators and Health Care Professionals.

Sisters and Brothers:

I'd like to take the opportunity this Labor Day to thank you for all of your hard work and public service.  No matter what you do in your professional work, AFSCME takes pride in what you do.  Labor Day to me is something more than just another day off to spend with our families, though that is one of the most important things in life.  It's also a day in which we remember our fallen fellow workers, servicemen and women, and a time to stop and reflect on the resiliency and dedication of the American worker.  Times are tough for many out there looking for work, but I am confident that we'll make it through this economic downturn stronger than ever before, once all is said and done.

It is because of Unions that we have a strong middle class in America, that we have benefits and pensions, and that we have rights in the workplace.  To celebrate our Union, I'd like to invite you and all AFSCME members to celebrate Labor Day with us.  We will be holding a picnic at the AFSCME Iowa Council 61 Union Hall, at 4320 NW Second Ave. in Des Moines on Labor Day.  Please join us in a celebration of solidarity at 1:30 PM on September 6th for food, fun, and to spend time with your Union brothers and sisters.  I hope to see you there.

In Solidarity,

Danny Homan

President, AFSCME Iowa Council 61
